# № 7 | Pick up a real newspaper at the weekend

It might seem strange for us to recommend that you buy a completely different publication, but this week's *Greater Things* is all about switching off from your devices at the weekend. There's a reason that we've had over 400 years of newsprint; it's the best way to display news and information. While the internet has changed nearly everything, the ergonomics of holding a magazine or newspaper in front of you remain unaltered; Homo sapiens' corneas haven't changed since the first stone tablet was chiselled, and our limbs are of the same proportions. An hour with a print publication will leave you feeling better informed, on a broader range of subjects, than three hours of Instagram.

This isn't to say that Britain's newspapers are a journalistic paragon of virtue. But at least paper can't serve you a selection of algorithmic articles designed to exact as much anger, fury, or frustration, in order to monetise your eyeballs as possible. You know where you stand with print, even in the darkest depths of the Telegraph comment pages.

There are few finer joys than beginning the weekend in bed, separating out the sections of the newspaper, and reading everything that Meta never knew you'd be interested in.

We'd also recommend heading to your nearest shop to buy one. You might be surprised how few still sell real newspapers. But, if we want to preserve this civilised weekend tradition, we need shops to keep selling them.

And now a word of warning. You might baulk at the price if you haven't bought one for a while. Weekend newspapers with the most sections now retail at more than £5\. In 2026, with so much free content on the internet, that might feel a bit steep. But remember that in the moments that you spend in bed doomscrolling, Meta is making much more than a fiver. You can pay that £5 in cash to the newsagent, or pay with your attention span. All this aside, an FT Weekend will give you and your household nearly a full week's reading, so it's not as costly as it first appears. One weekend avoiding news from social media, and we guarantee you'll agree that it's well worth it.
