Welcome to a pre-Hallowe'en edition of Sunday Paperweight. With the Government launching its 'Be Ready' emergency preparedness campaign, and the US midterms fast approaching, you might perhaps wonder if we really need the additional scares that the Celtic New Year weekend brings. This week's *Greater Things* offers up ideas for decorating your home to ward off the evil spirits in a way that Henri Matisse would approve of, and our editor, Cal Roscow, takes a trip to the revival show that's being billed as a spiritual successor to *Les Misérables.*

Here's what's coming up:

**Darkroom:** The shimmering lights of the River of Light Festival in Liverpool
**UK Affairs:** Following Angela Rayner's intervention, we list ten 'essentials' for your emergency preparedness box
**On the Town:** A review of Warchus's penultimate production at the Old Vic
**On the Grapevine:** Could the UK's best-kept secret, London City Airport, be getting a lounge?

Followed by the usual restaurant openings, listings, and weather for cities across the UK.

People interact with an illuminated installation called Flower Power as part of the River Of Light Festival in Liverpool. In Exchange Flags Square, seven large faceted flowers scatter thousands of colourful, shimmering reflections across the ground, surrounding architecture and visitors. An interactive jukebox invites the public to select tracks from a diverse playlist. Each piece is synchronised with a unique lighting sequence, creating a succession of immersive atmospheres. ### Greater Things

1001 ways to live your life greater:

Hallowe'en doesn't have to be an American horror story. Embrace the simple pleasure of decorating your home with squashes and gourds in a way that's more true to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain:

[№ 18 | Embrace true Hallowe'en: Decorate your house with squashes and gourds for SamhainHallowe'en (yes, that's right, we use the correct spelling in this house) is rightly being reclaimed from the Americans. After decades of horror films claiming the ritual for their own, we're finally taking it back. You've probably already heard that All Hallows Eve has its roots![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/97/7c/977c5cdf-7176-4cbd-bf06-fc5902787e82/content/images/icon/Roundel-101363af-968f-43b7-a2e2-bc6aab81cded.png)Paperweight MagazineSunday Paperweight![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/97/7c/977c5cdf-7176-4cbd-bf06-fc5902787e82/content/images/thumbnail/getty-images-5512wCDaV8c-unsplash-2-6307f64a-5acf-45cd-a4d5-5d611ba7faec.jpg)](https://www.paperweightmag.com/p/822cad4c-3dfd-4073-b6db-65ea0e435eb7/?member%5Fstatus=free)

### UK Affairs

The latest from Paperweight's UK Affairs bureau:

This week Andy Burnham and Angela Rayner couldn't agree on the essentials that you should have in your emergency preparedness box. We set out to clear things up:

[Ten 'essentials' for your emergency preparedness boxThis was the month that 'prepping' went mainstream, with Security Minister Dan Jarvis launching the government's 'Be Ready' campaign to get everyone to keep stores of water, non-perishable food, torches, blankets, and a variety of other items at home. While this is undeniably sensible advice, the cabinet was![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/97/7c/977c5cdf-7176-4cbd-bf06-fc5902787e82/content/images/icon/Roundel-2aeb726b-d075-4d5b-b3aa-b7bb1a83b534.png)Paperweight MagazineSunday Paperweight![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/97/7c/977c5cdf-7176-4cbd-bf06-fc5902787e82/content/images/thumbnail/logan-weaver-lgnwvr-s1sLdHL78Hs-unsplash-73c12493-de4f-40b6-a28e-89a999dd996b.jpg)](https://www.paperweightmag.com/p/75c9a228-f348-4626-a3dd-0654d792d0d0/?member%5Fstatus=free)

### On the Grapevine

Gossip that we've been told this week:

Rumour has it that the UK's favourite airport is set to finally get a lounge. Although don't call it a lounge, this is being strictly billed as a 'suite', whatever that means. Officially named [*09:LDN Suite*](https://www.londoncityairport.com/media-centre/press-releases/aspire-announces-09-ldn-suite-name-as-london-city-airport-looks-to-2027-and-40-years-of-aviation?ref=paperweightmag.com), riffing off its 90° angle from the runway, it's set to be open to those with Dragonpass and Priority Pass. The press release reads:
*“Building on an airport experience passengers love, 09:LDN Suite will celebrate and draw inspiration from the very best of London and its countless contributions to the world of art, gastronomy, hospitality and culture.*

*“It will provide guests with an exclusive, elevated pre-flight hospitality experience, the luxury of space and a moment of pause and relaxation before their onward journey.”*

Given that the main appeal of London City Airport is the fact that you can spend barely any time there, one wonders if this will be a success... As ever, remember that the first rule of London City Airport is that you never tell anyone about London City Airport.

### On the Town

What's happening in town this week:

It's being billed as the spiritual successor to *Les Misérables.* Cal Roscow reviews a revival of a show that flopped:

[Review: Martin Guerre★★★★☆ | Warchus's swan song is a brilliant rebirth of Schönberg and Boublil's long-languishing musical![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/97/7c/977c5cdf-7176-4cbd-bf06-fc5902787e82/content/images/icon/Roundel-fe292a4e-f580-4df4-ad25-6f77c1173a13.png)Paperweight MagazineCal Roscow![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/97/7c/977c5cdf-7176-4cbd-bf06-fc5902787e82/content/images/thumbnail/Martin-Guerre-871611e6-2f5f-4ec1-aba4-6233927d8625.jpg)](https://www.paperweightmag.com/review-martin-guerre/)
