The shared experiences of cinema and Celebrity Traitors

Sunday, 4th October 2026

Published:

This week's Sunday Paperweight is all about the importance of shared experiences, whether that's the feeling of togetherness watching a newly released film in the cinema with a fellow audience, or the strangely comforting sense of belonging that comes from 'water cooler TV moments'. But if you would prefer to enjoy the last of unseasonably warm weather, the week ahead's listings are stuffed with things to do across Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Here's what's coming up:

Darkroom: Autumn-ripe sunflowers are a feast for squirrels
UK Affairs: What can we learn about shared experiences from the success of Celebrity Traitors
On the Town: Alex Rees reviews a new dark comedy thriller starring Saoirse Ronan

Followed by the usual restaurant openings, listings, and weather for cities across the UK.

UK Affairs

The latest from Paperweight's UK Affairs bureau:

On Thursday just gone, something very unusual happened: nine million people tuned into the same television programme at the same time to watch it live. Cal Roscow writes about the importance of shared cultural moments on a nation's psyche:

The success of The Traitors is proof that we’re longing for shared experiences
Something rather unusual happened on Thursday 1st October 2026. More than half of the people watching live television across the United Kingdom were tuned into the same programme at exactly the same time. 8.9 million viewers, to be exact, which works out to be 54.9% of the viewing

Greater Things

1001 ways to live your life greater:

This week's Greatest Things encourages all to support the cinemas that are bucking the trend, soldiering on, and offering a good night out to those who still want to see films on the big screen. It might surprise you to learn just how many smaller cinemas there are near you (and the Independent Cinema Office has even made a map):

№ 15 | Become a regular at your local independent cinema
It’s early evening. You’ve decided that you’d like to see a film that’s been released recently. Now comes the decision: watch it at home on one of the ever-earlier-releasing streaming services, or head out to the flicks and see it on the big screen.

On the Town

What's happening in town this week:

And if you've decided that you will head out to the flicks this week, film critic Alex Rees recommends Jonatan Etzler's dark comedy thriller, Bad Apples, in this week's film review:

Review: Bad Apples
★★★★☆ | Toe-curling tension in Saoirse Ronan’s teacher thriller

On the Grapevine

Gossip that we've been told this week:

Frustration is growing over the increasing occurrence of passengers being kicked off British Airways flights from London City Airport at the last minute. A 2024 refit of the Embraer 190 jets that can cope with the short runway and steep angle of approach added two extra rows of seats, taking capacity from 98 passengers up to 106. Although BA admitted early on that warm weather might result in flights not being able to take off at full capacity, the volume of comments on Reddit in the last few weeks suggests that it's now happening when the runway is wet too. With London likely to experience warmer and wetter weather, one might question whether the extra revenue from more seats is worth the reputation damage of so many people being offloaded. City's reputation for shorter check-in and security times will likely be wiped out if BA keeps bumping passengers who paid a premium to use the service in the first place.

In other news, a former employee of Shoreditch House has claimed in a TikTok this week that he had been let go from his job after refusing to change 'use by' labels on food that was going off. A spokesperson for the group said the employee’s contract had been terminated for other reasons unrelated to his complaint. But it has resulted in a food safety investigation by Hackney Council...
