When people first discover that the brave people who form the operation that saves lives at sea are volunteers working for a charity, they're often surprised. How could such an essential emergency service not be government-funded? For much of living memory, the RNLI's commitment to operational independence might have seemed excessively cautious. Even stubborn, perhaps.

The RNLI does not seek funding from central government, to ensure that we retain independence in all that we do to save lives at sea.

But the rise of far-right attacks on the 200-year-old charity, and accusations that the RNLI serves as "a taxi service for illegal migrants", make that commitment seem rather prescient. With Nigel Farage waiting in the wings of power, that desire to be free from political interference is likely to be lifesaving.

The situation has become so dire that the organisation has dedicated a page on its website to dispelling myths around rescues in the Channel. As they succinctly put it, "Anyone can drown. No one should."

In an era of decreasing faith in public service bodies, it's a reminder that we're pretty fortunate to live in a country that has so many institutions with noble intent.

Attacks from organised radical right groups require a response, and public affairs campaigns cost a lot of money. Money that's being taken away from saving lives at sea. So, this week's Greater Things asks you to support an organisation that's bearing the brunt of the culture war du jour. After all, any of us could be next to call upon their rescue.
