There's nothing quite like the Edinburgh Fringe, but with the ever-rising cost of putting on a show, not everyone can afford to go. This week's Greater Things is all about supporting everyone who isn't at the Festival, while rewarding yourself by seeing something unexpected from emerging talent.
Although it's true that there's much less on everywhere else in August, theatre schedules are still packed with stuff to see. And stand-up venues in London and other cities will host comedians that are breaking into the industry. It could also be awful, but that's what seeing unexpected shows should be all about. As the weather cools down, venues are enticing everyone back inside with offers. (The Comedy Store in London is offering £5 pints, house wines & house spirits, from 6:30pm to 7pm every evening except Saturdays).
It might just be the moment that you see someone's first show, before they make it big.
