Review: Into the Woods

★★★★★ | Sondheim and Lapine's enchanting show is given everlasting life in Jordan Fein's transfer to the West End

Could Into the Woods be the greatest example of Sondheim’s genius? Using chopped-up fairy tales as its source material, it paints life as a complex, ever-changing tangle, noting that even the happiest of endings might not be so happy if you look a little closer. Melancholy, strange, existential, and properly tear-jerking, it is a gorgeous, soaring feat of musical theatre. It would take a very bad production, then, to rob it of its magic, but Jordan Fein’s - which premiered at The Bridge last year - elevates this near-perfect show to new heights. Now in the West End, it is every bit as spellbinding.
