This week's Sunday Paperweight arrives during another week of fairly dire geopolitical events; Donald Trump's done a deal with the devil - having agreed to buy diesel off Putin, swiftly followed by calls for Zelensky to resign, Houthi attacks on Riyadh are set to escalate, Pete Hegseth has announced an Atwoodian-style plan to livestream an execution by firing squad, and several warnings have been issued about the UK's food security in the face of war and climate change. But small mercies may be on the horizon; pollsters are now predicting that an increasingly desperate Trump administration may lose the Senate seats of Texas, Iowa, Kansas, and Alaska in next month's mid-term elections, giving the Democrats control of the upper house. Meanwhile, Andy Burnham's European charm offensive may be paying off, with experts predicting that the UK may be able to join the European Union faster than (other experts) had originally predicted.
It is perhaps then no wonder that this week's most notable exhibition opening was that of Tate Britain's celebration of the 1990s. Happier times indeed! But all is not lost. With the weather beginning to finally cool to more autumn-appropriate temperatures, new restaurants are popping up all over, offering something for cosier evenings indoors away from the chill. In that same spirit, Greg Barradale offers his advice for starting a book club, Anya Ryan reviews a Sondheim classic that's transferred to the West End, and Keir James-Tough has a recipe for chutney that will mature in time for Christmas.
Here's what's coming up:
Darkroom: The return of an icon, part of Tate Britain's new exhibition on the 1990s
At Home: Keir James-Tough's exquisitely easy chutney recipe
On the Town: Anya Ryan reviews Sondheim's Into the Woods and the despot's guide to running a book club
En Route: New interiors on British Airways and a train travel trick for travelling between London and Edinburgh
Followed by the usual restaurant openings, listings, and weather for cities across the UK.

On the Town
What's happening in town this week:
If running clubs and podcasting aren't your thing, Greg Barradale argues that there's a chance that this is your sign to start a book club. Here's his advice on how to cast off and ensure that you run a tight ship:

Theatre critic Anya Ryan takes a trip to the Noël Coward Theatre, where Jordan Fein's elevation of the Sondheim masterpiece, Into the Woods, has just transferred from the Bridge Theatre:

En Route
The latest from Paperweight's En Route bureau:
We've got rather used to announcements from the UK's flag-carrying airline near exclusively revolve around something being axed, so we were pleased to see this week's announcement of an entirely new Airbus A380 interior, in all four cabins. Looks like you'll have a pretty great experience whichever ticket you opt for, now that British Airways has decided to try and compete with the rest of the world's airlines again.
Despite being publicly owned, LNER trains between Edinburgh and London are notoriously expensive, thanks to a dreadful decision to scrap off-peak fares last year. But the decision to remove the cheaper tickets that can be used on any train only affects LNER itself. So if you're looking for a flexible ticket outside of the usual peak times, you might find it cheaper to make your origin or destination Slateford, rather than Edinburgh Waverley. It isn't always cheaper, but on busy trains it can save you as much as 30%. Slateford is just one stop outside Edinburgh Waverley, meaning the journey has to take you all the way to Waverley first anyway. However, you can only end your journey 'early' if the ticket is truly an "Off-Peak" single or return. An Advance fare ticket to Slateford means you have to go all the way to your end destination, so check what you're buying very carefully. If you have any other train ticketing tricks, do send them to enroute@paperweightmag.com
